The Alexandria Quartet AudioBooks

Cover designs for a series of four novels set in the sensuous, hot environment of Alexandria

Naxos AudioBooks has been established for 30 years and been a pioneering force in the world of audiobooks. They quickly established a reputation for fine recordings by outstanding classical actors, combined with their extensive classical music recordings.

The Alexandria Quartet is a series of four interlinked novels set in the sensuous, hot environment of Alexandria just before the Second World War. Within this setting of richly idiosyncratic characters is Justine, wild and intense. Her emotional and sexual wildness fuels a highly charged atmosphere which, caught famously by Durrell’s poetic language, made Justine, and the three novels that complete the Quartet – Balthazar, Mountolive, and Clea – both a critical and a popular success.

The design for this series is based on abstract shadows from North African style lanterns. This evokes the setting and intimacy of the novels without direct reference to specific characters, to create an instantly recognisable, continuous theme, regardless of the story’s progression.

‘The politics of love, the intrigues of desire, good and evil, virtue and caprice, love and murder, moved obscurely in the dark corners of Alexandria’s streets and squares, brothels and drawing-rooms – moved like a great congress of eels in the slime of plot and counter-plot.’
